The Division of Design in the School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington in Seattle invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Interaction Design to start in September 2020. This position has a nine-month service period.
The University of Washington’s Interaction Design program shapes the experiences of products, systems, and services: mobile and wearable computing, connected devices, and interactive systems that affect personal, social and societal contexts. Building on a careful analysis of insights from first hand research in today’s world, students in the IxD program envision and prototype relevant, appropriate, delightful, and sustainable experiences that push the boundaries of the relationship between people and technology.
This position will utilize pedagogy and research approaches that are expanding current definitions of design, and will engage in critical, inventive and experimental work in Interaction Design. The person in this position will be expected to contribute and collaborate effectively in our community of Industrial Design, Interaction Design, and Visual Communication Design, as well as to collaborate across campus and thrive amongst Seattle’s fast-moving design and technology industry. The candidate’s teaching will include all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The person in this position will take an active role in shaping the future of Interaction Design and the design graduate program.
Applicants will have a master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, by the start of the appointment, as well as a minimum of two years of professional industry or academic experience. The ideal candidate combines knowledge of design theory, methods and research techniques.
