Ph.D studentship in Design Engineering  - Imperial College London - Dyson School of Design Engineering

Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of Design Engineering starting in October 2018 and leading to the award of a PhD degree.

Aim

In order to support innovation, we conduct scientific studies of design creativity. The aim of this doctoral research is to develop new tools that can leverage design engineers’ creativity, by facilitating multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural collaboration in design projects. Based on previous studies on design creativity, the Ph.D candidate will imagine and design a new tool. The impact of the tool on designers’ activity will be assessed through a series of observations in real-life context.

Funding

The post is supported by a bursary and fees (at the UK/EU student rate) provided by the EPSRC. To be eligible for funding, you must have no restrictions on how long you can stay in the UK and been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years. More information on eligibility here. Please feel free to contact us for checking your eligibility.

Research environment

You will work within a passionate and dynamic team of innovators and researchers, in the newly refurbished facilities of the Dyson School of Design Engineering (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/design-engineering/). You will also have extensive interactions with research collaborators from institutions in Europe and in Asia.

Required skills

We are seeking candidates with a minimum 2:1 (or equivalent) first degree in Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject, and a “Maker” mindset. A passion for design and innovation, demonstrated by extra-curricular activities or industrial experience, is desirable. Knowledge in micro-computing or 3d printing is an asset. Good team-working and communication skills are essential.

How to apply

Informal inquiries should be sent to Dr. Celine Mougenot: c.mougenot@imperial.ac.uk, along with a CV.  Applications can be received until 30th April 2018.
