The Batten College of Engineering & Technology at Old Dominion University (odu.edu/BCET) invites applications from experienced, accomplished, and visionary individuals to serve as Professor & Chair of the Department of Engineering Management & Systems Engineering (odu.edu/EMSE) starting in June 2025. This is an annual 12-month tenured appointment. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in departmental education, research, and outreach activities in alignment with the strategic plan of the College and University.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Planning and executing strategic initiatives for the department.
  • Representing the department and interacting with the college and university leadership.
  • Mentoring, supporting, supervising, and evaluating faculty and staff.
  • Developing and supporting key research thrusts in the department and the college.
  • Fostering interdisciplinary research and partnerships with industry and government agencies.
  • Promoting the evolution and advancement of the department’s academic curriculum design and leading efforts to attain/maintain graduate program certification by the American Society for Engineering Management and the International Council on Systems Engineering.
  • Planning and scheduling courses offerings.
  • Demonstrating commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Working closely with the advisory board of the department to ensure continuous improvement in programs and initiatives.
  • Overseeing the budget.
  • Performing research and scholarly activities.
  • Teaching courses in related areas.
  • Developing educational and research relationships with industry and government laboratories in the Hampton Roads region.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Candidates must hold an earned doctoral degree in Engineering Management, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field and be eligible for an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.
  2. A record of scholarly accomplishments including peer-reviewed publications and an externally funded research program.
  3. Strong leadership and communication skills, including the ability to articulate a vision for advancing the education and research mission of the department through partnerships with academia, private industry, and government organizations.
  4. Demonstrate strong commitment to shared governance practices, transparency, consensus building, and collaborative leadership values.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in academic leadership roles, such as Department Chair or Director of research centers, experience with the development and delivery of curriculum by different modalities, including synchronous, asynchronous, online, and live formats.

About the Department: The EMSE Department, a three-time recipient of the ASEM Founder’s Award for “Excellence in Academic Leadership,” has 9 full-time faculty members, over 350 graduate students at master’s level, and over 50 Ph.D. students. EMSE offers master’s and doctoral degrees in Engineering Management, Systems Engineering and an undergraduate minor in Engineering Management in synchronous and asynchronous formats.
