ICED 2023 Africa - Design Workshop
Monday, 24 July 2023 13:45-16:45 (CET)
Bordeaux, France
(Hybrid Mode)
Building a network of design researchers, educators, and practitioners based in Africa with emphasis on design for global sustainable development
General ICED Information: https://iced.designsociety.org
The workshop builds on activities undertaken under the Design Society’s Africa-Design Initiative since 2019. Previous workshops and publications at ICED 2019, DESIGN 2020, ICED 2021, and DESIGN 2022 explored the state of the art and the needs for mutual learning activities on design for sustainable development in Africa. Several Barazas also took place; these were community-driven events led by members of the design community at large (a baraza is a Swahili word for a public meeting place). Other modalities of mutual learning have been discussed including workshops, short courses, on-site local events, knowledge repositories. Building upon these experiences, the need and desire for creating a formal Design Society African Chapter led by Africa-based members has been expressed and further encouraged by the Design Society Board of Management. An exploratory steering committee has been formed towards this goal. The workshop will provide a forum for assessing progress to date, challenges and opportunities, and a plan for moving forward.
The workshop’s objectives are to discuss and reach consensus on:
- The introduction and assessment of the potential for forming an African Chapter including challenges and opportunities;
- Introduction of Design Science Journal Thematic Collection on Design in Africa
Preceding the workshop the community to submitted ideas through a survey. These will be incorporated into the program to seed discussions and brainstorming. Specific topics to be addressed will be related to the workshop objectives described above. As many participants from developing countries will not have the resources to travel or pay workshop fees, we plan a hybrid event and anticipate a fee waiver for Africa-based participants.
