Systems is how we understand the world and design is how we change it.

The Department of Systems Design Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a Lecturer faculty position. We are seeking a dynamic teacher with a passion for providing an outstanding undergraduate experience in engineering education. The successful candidate will share our department’s commitment to leading our students to become engineering practitioners, researchers, and systems thinkers.

The Software Design Lecturer will teach in our transdisciplinary undergraduate programs in Systems Design Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. The curriculum emphasizes wholistic design and a systems approach to teach software systems, programming, data structures, and algorithms. Desirable areas for the successful candidate to teach may include embedded software systems, user experience (UX), software ethics, human-computer interaction (HCI), and data analytics. The Lecturer will teach within our active design curriculum as well as other core engineering courses.

The definite term appointment is at the rank of Lecturer within our teaching faculty stream. The initial three-year appointment is renewable for a second term of three years after which it is expected that candidates demonstrating outstanding performance will be considered for promotion to appointment as a permanent member of the faculty. Candidates may hold a PhD degree in engineering, computer science or a related discipline. Exceptional candidates with appropriate professional experience and a master’s degree in engineering or computer science may be considered. The successful candidate is required to have an engineering license for practice (full) or teaching (limited) in Canada or to apply for a Canadian engineering license within the first year of joining the University. Due to program accreditation requirements, all new faculty members are normally expected to obtain the license before the end of the first term. Re- appointment is conditional upon satisfying this requirement.

The Lecturer teaching load in the department is currently 10 courses over two years. Besides assigned undergraduate courses, the successful candidate will mentor undergraduate students including in our design courses. This position will involve active engagement in student outreach activities and student clubs. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated exceptional teaching skills and a diversity of experience, including industry experience.

Review of applications will begin upon receipt; Applications received by May 31, 2023, will be given full consideration. However, applications will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. References are requested but will only be contacted for applicants invited for an interview. The salary range for this lecturer rank is $100,000 to $130,000 but may be higher for those with considerable professional experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents will be given priority. The appointment has a preferred starting date of August 1, 2023.
