Fellows

A FeIIow is a Society member recognised by the Society as having made a truly significant contribution to the Society and its aims and objectives. Such contributions include significant involvement and publication record in the Society’s events like conferences and workshops, sustainable initiatives to the scientific or professional development of the Society, special commitment to its organisation, or strong contributions to key issues of the Society’s research or educational objectives.  The grade of Fellow is reserved for Full Members of the Society.  Eligible nominees must be current Members of the Design Society for at least 6 continuous years.

Petra Badke-Schaub

Petra Badke-Schaub is Professor of Design Theory and Design Methodology at Delft University of Technology. She has a background in cognitive and social psychology and did her PhD on groups and complex problem solving. Her research interests and publications cover topics such as research and design methodology, quantitative and qualitative research approaches, team mental models, experience and creativity in design, and the influences of cognitive processes on thinking in design teams. She developed approaches for defining and analysing critical situations, and for problem solving and decision making of individuals and teams in complex environments. Her research encompasses long-term interdisciplinary projects with a focus on the analysis of teamwork and leadership processes as well as laboratory studies on thinking in design.

Luciënne Blessing

Lucienne has over 35 years of university teaching experience –mainly in systematic product development, design science, and Machine Elements. Her research Interests include Empirical studies into design, Design methodologies, Design Education, Systems design, User experience; Design Science, Design Theory, Transdisciplinarity, and Ethics. Lucienne is a co-founder of the Design Society and spent a total of 16 years on the Board of Management and Advisory Board. She is also on the Editorial Board of the Design Research Foundations book series (Springer); and was Editor-in-Chief (Europe) of the Research in Engineering Design journal from 1996-2009.

John Clarkson

John is a leading researcher at Cambridge University, in four key areas: design change modelling and management; design process management; inclusive design; and healthcare design. Most of his research has been led in close collaboration with a range of industry practitioners and together with public and private institutions. To ensure the transfer of his many academic research findings to practice, Prof. Clarkson has supervised or contributed to the development of toolkits and dissemination strategies, including the Inclusive Design toolkit, the Improving Improvement toolkit and the Systems Safety Assessment toolkit for healthcare organisations. Within the Design Society, Prof. Clarkson has given special commitment, through his twelve-year membership of the Advisory Board, his active service through numerous journal editorial roles and by the co-founding and leading of two Special Interest Groups.

Steven Eppinger

Steven is Professor of Management Science and Innovation at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he holds the General Motors Leaders for Global Operations Chair. He is co-author of the textbook Product Design and Development. Now in its 7th edition, the text has been used by hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. His research focuses on improving complex technical project management. Recent work has focused on applying agile software development methods to various other industries. Prior research is the basis of the book “Design Structure Matrix Methods and Applications”. His research contributes to fields ranging from project management and systems engineering to product development and product management. He is among the most widely cited scholars in the engineering design and technical management disciplines.
 
Armand Hatchuel

Armand Hatchuel has contributed to the development of Design Theory - his works on C-K Design Theory, on Forcing or on the ontology of Design have provided clear foundations for a Design-based paradigm in Science and Engineering. Armand is founding member and the first chairman (with Yoram Reich) of the Design Society Special Interest Group (SIG) on Design Theory. He is a member of the French Academy of Technologies.

Bill joined the University of Strathclyde in 1986, following a period in industry, and was Head of the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) from 2002 to 2008. He has been actively involved in the development of design and design management education at the University since joining, having led the development and introduction of the department's Product Design Engineering programmes. Throughout his academic career Bill has focussed his research, knowledge exchange and teaching activities within the design and manufacturing field with a particular focus on forging and forming technologies, additive manufacture, design for manufacture and design processes. He was chair of the Design Education Special Interest Group (DESIG) of the Design Society from 2002 to 2013 and a member of the core organising committee of the International Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE) conference series since its inception in 1999.
 
Udo Lindemann

Udo Lindemann has contributed to the development of theory and methods in Product Development. Udo is a founding member of the Design Society. He has served on the Advisory Board and the Board of Management. As President and member of several ICED Programme Committees he contributed to the development of the Design Society. He is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering.
 
Dorian Marjanović

Dorian has been at the University of Zagreb since 1978. Before joining the Design Department in 1984, he gathered engineering experience at the Quality Management Department and Design Office (1970-1975) at SILA-RAPID Company and Computing Centre for the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (1978-1984). He led the Chair of Design and Product Development at the Design Department from 1996 until 2016. He has been retired since 2018. In April 2019, he was promoted to the honorary title Professor Emeritus. He is a member of the Design Society and served as President of the Society from 2013-2017. The Design Society awarded him in 2019 with the title "Fellow of the Design Society" to recognise his outstanding contributions to the design research community through service, practice, teaching, and research.
 
Christopher McMahon

Chris McMahon's research spans from the early days of CAD/CAM development where he contributed at the forefront of contemporary research in knowledge management in design and product design. Chris is a founding member of the Design Society. He served on the Advisory Board and the Board of Management and was President of the Design Society from 2009 - 2013.
 
Margareta Norell Bergendahl

As Professor of Integrated Product Development at KTH, Margareta Norell Bergendahl's contribution to Design Science, both in Scandinavia and internationally, has been outstanding, where she has paid particular attention to young researchers’ career development in design, not least with respect to ensuring equal gender and racial opportunities. In addition, Prof. Norell Bergendahl is a long-time member of the Design Society, having served on both the Board of Management and the Advisory Board. She has been active in many of the DS’ SIGs and is currently heading the “Africa Design” initiative, together with Panos Papalambros.
 
Panos Papalambros

During his academic career, Professor Panos Y. Papalambros has made numerous contributions to the field of Mechanical Engineering, many whilst based at the University of Michigan, including his role as Founding Director of the Design Science Program and the Integrative Systems and Design Division. As a founding Editor-in-Chief of the Design Science Journal, Prof. Papalambros has contributed to the proliferation of knowledge through his coordination of the journal, review and scientific contributions towards editorial. As a former President of the DS, former BM member and current AB member, Prof. Papalambros has exhibited a large commitment to the DS and its organisation.
 
Yoram Reich

Yoram Reich is a Full Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering, Tel Aviv University, where he directs the design and CAD track in the mechanical engineering undergraduate studies. He has co-authored more than 250 papers and three books, the last published titled: We Are Not Users: Dialogues Diversity and Design (MIT Press, 2020). His research interests include product design methods and theories, systems engineering, and innovation. He is an Editor-in-Chief for Research in Engineering Design, an Associate Editor for Design Science, and a member of the editorial board of six other journals. Yoram served a total of 10 years on the Design Society’s Advisory Board from 2009 to 2019. He also was a founding co-chair of the society’s Design Theory SIG in 2009.
 
Warren Seering

Warren's research contributions include algorithms to synthesise mechanical systems, design risk management, and control of dynamic systems. He was one of the founding members of the Design Society. He has served on both the Board of Management and the Advisory Board. Serving as AB Chair, he developed the AB from its original format of oversight board into the thought leadership format it has today. In addition, Prof. Seering played a significant role in establishing the Design Society’s membership and representation in North America. He actively supports the renewal of the society by encouraging younger members to join, contribute and grow into leadership roles. Numerous former students of Prof. Seering has gone on to become academic faculty leaders in the Design Research Community and active Design Society members, including roles as AB members and SIG leaders.
 
Christian Weber

Christian Weber's research interests are Design Theory and Methodology (DTM), computer support in product development (CAx), and methods for the development of mechatronic systems. He was a founding member of the Design Society, serving on the Society’s Advisory Board and on the Board of Management. Since 2000 Christian has been a co-organiser of the annual Summer School on Engineering Design Research.
