DS FELLOW PROFILE

Professor William Ion joined the University of Strathclyde in 1986, following a period in industry, and was Head of the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) from 2002 to 2008. He has been actively involved in the development of design and design management education at the University since joining, having led the development and introduction of the department's Product Design Engineering programmes.

Throughout his academic career Bill has focussed his research, knowledge exchange and teaching activities within the design and manufacturing field with a particular focus on forging and forming technologies, additive manufacture, design for manufacture and design processes. He was chair of the Design Education Special Interest Group (DESIG) of the Design Society from 2002 to 2013 and a member of the core organising committee of the International Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE) conference series since its inception in 1999.

 

From time to time, the Society recognises individuals for their contributions to design research, education, practice and service by bestowing Design Society Fellowships. The grade of Fellow of the Design Society recognises full members for their outstanding contributions to the Design Society through service, practice, teaching, and research. The title of Honorary Fellow of the Design Society recognises a member or non-member for their outstanding contributions to the global design community through service, practice, teaching, or research.

All Design Society members can nominate a person for Fellow status, with an annual nomination deadline of 1st December.
