Workshop of the SIG HBiD: How do you validate design methods?

Towards a more holistic understanding of validation.

Friday 5th February 2021, 1pm - 3pm CET

Validation is a crucial, but still a challenging activity in design research. This workshop is about current approaches and issues in design method validation in the area of product development. The goal of this workshop is to start fostering a common understanding of and enrich existing views about design method validation. Participants will be invited in an open discussion format to share their views and experiences on validation procedures. Moreover, specific challenges and barriers in design method validation will be shared as well. The German research foundation granted the institute of product development and mechanical engineering design at the Hamburg University of Technology (Hamburg, Germany, led by Professor Krause) in cooperation with the institute of product engineering, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Karlsruhe, Germany, research group of Professor Matthiesen), to specifically address these challenges and barriers. This project aims to develop a solution incorporating already existing approaches to support the engineering design researchers. First solution approaches developed in this project will be presented in this workshop as well.

The overall purpose of this workshop in February is to initiate an exchange on design method validation and share perspectives amongst participants of the HBiD SIG community in the first step. It serves as a preliminary workshop for a deeper and broader discussion in the HBiD SIG workshop on ICED‘21 about design method validation advancements and best practices. This should ultimately contribute to the betterment of engineering design research quality.
