Postgraduate Scholarship in Design and Product Innovation
DESCRIPTION: One full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with an appropriate honours degree (first class or high 2A) in design, engineering, computer science, business or mathematics to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Design. Where appropriate, the successful research students may have the option of being jointly supervised with academic staff from other faculties. The candidate’s research will investigate why it is that the design of certain products affords faster rates of progress than others. This research would allow us to forecast a product’s rate of improvement and to (re)design a product so that it will sustainably improve with a growing stock of knowledge. The candidate’s project will contribute to the ARC Future Fellowship project ‘Inventiveness and the Progress of Product Innovation’.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants should have a particular interest in product design and innovation. An understanding of or capacity for quantitative analysis involving linear algebra, complex networks, statistics or social simulation would highly beneficial. Applicants who are Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens are normally exempt from paying fees when studying for a PhD. International students are eligible for the scholarships but would need to meet tuition fees from their own sources.

AMOUNT AWARDED: The scholarship is valued at $22,860 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

APPLICATION GUIDE: Further information can be obtained from Associate Professor Andy Dong, Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning (G04), The University of Sydney NSW 2006 (Phone: (0)2 9351 4766; Fax: (0)2 9351 3031 E-mail: andy.dong@sydney.edu.au). Applications should be sent direct to Associate Professor Andy Dong at the above address and should include a curriculum vita, a copy of an academic transcript, and the names and contact details of at least two referees.
