Venue and location information: Munich, Germany
Over the years, complexity management has taken different forms. The Design Structure Matrix is one that has proven very valuable in designing and optimizing technical systems, complex organizations, densely networked processes and large market structures.
The International Design Structure Matrix (DSM) Conference has, since long, been the forum to exchange developments, trends, and ideas to propel complexity management across various industries. It brings together international experts in the discussion of advances in complexity management in an industrial context, the development of tools to handle complex architectures and in sharing new research ideas.
Report:
From 16th to 18th October 2007 the 9th International DSM Conference took place in Munich, Germany. Organized by Prof. Udo Lindemann (Institute for Product Development) and by Prof. Mike Danilovic (Jönköping International Business School), the conference took place at the BMW headquarters in Munich on the ground floor of the well-known “Four Cylinder Building”, chaired by Prof. Raymond Freymann (BMW Group).
The Design Structure Matrix (DSM) has become a well accepted means of making complex networks accessible. It has, over the years, led to the establishment of the DSM workshops and conferences that took place in Boston, Cambridge, and Seattle.
Each year, the conference brings together international experts in the discussion of advances in complexity management in an industrial context, the development of tools to handle complex architectures and in sharing new research ideas. To just name a few, e.g. Tyson Browning, Don Steward, Andrew Kusiak, Georges Fadel, John Clarkson, Jürgen Gausemeier and many others contributed to the 33 papers. Overall, 80 participants took part, coming from 15 different countries to discuss four groups of topics in depth:
- Product Architectures: Design and Planning
- Product Architectures: Modeling and Analysis
- Processes: Planning, Modeling and Analysis
- Enterprise: Modeling and Analysis
The topics of the conference concerned, above all, new scientific methods and applications of handling complex architectures, e.g. product architectures, process networks, organizational structures or markets. As being able to deal with them is of high significance for a company’s success, the conference was headlined “capitalize on complexity”. In fact, it turned out that especially the management of multiple views that contribute to a complex system has come into focus, through the combination of Design Structure Matrices (DSM) and Domain Mapping Matrices (DMM).
